Movie: Another Earth
Main Actors: Brit Marling and William Mapother
MPAA Rating: PG-13 – Yeah right, who comes up with these ratings? Certainly an R.
Passionate Expressions: Not a lot, this movie had very little talking.
Useless Vulgar Language: I don’t think I heard any.
Sex in Reality: Hmmmmm, tough one, I think I’m going to say yes. The two main characters have sex, they don’t really show anything and it is, unlike other movies, very connected to the story-line. The emotions being portrayed are very interesting.
Sex in a Bad Light: Not really.
Real Violence: This was not an action movie of any sort. There is a terrible car wreck and some anger/fighting, but nothing that really ventures into this category.
Action Violence: No.
Pointless Violence: No.
Overall Rating: A
Visual Effects: B
Food to Watch With: I wouldn’t recommend anything as this movie is pretty intense and engrossing.
Plot Synopsis: Hard to nail down entirely. I would say this movie is mostly about forgiveness, or the need for forgiveness.
Review: I think Brit Marling is my favorite new actress, not only because she was far and away the best actor in the movie, but because she helped write it. I don’t usually watch independent films. Partly because you never know what you are going to see, most independent film makers are obsessed with sex and showing you sex and sex, sex, sex; and partly because 8 out of 10 of them are terrible, usually filled with personal justifications from the writer’s point of view. Another Earth, however, was neither of these things. I don’t want to give away too much of the plot, suffice to say this is a movie you really have to pay attention to. You can’t watch it while you do something else or you will miss key events. Nothing pops out of the film and there isn’t always music to let you know that you should be paying attention. Don’t get too caught up in the fantastical side of the story, it is just a plot driver for the deeper meaning they were going for. If you have kids prepare to squirm a little bit and be prepared to cry; I cried, a lot.
Life Lessons: There are many in this movie, watch it.
Summary: An amazing look at the need that people have for forgiveness and what it can do to them if they don’t have it.
Would I Watch This Again: Yes, I just need a bit of time to recover in-between.
